Surgeries are available by appointment only. Customers with TNR cats, feral cats, and associated with rescues, please call the office to schedule an appointment. Do not schedule online. All other customers, please either call to schedule a time for your pet or you can schedule an appointment online by clicking here. Please note all animals should be 4-months old or older at the time of surgery.

Halifax Humane Society currently takes in over 15,000 animals each year, making it one of the largest animal shelters in the state of Florida. Of those, over 8,300 are feral cats taken in through municipal contracts. As such, board members made the expansion of spay/neuter programs a top operational priority for this year.Through a generous donation of $50,000 by Alan & Mary Ann Redinger, it was possible to outfit the building as a state-of-the-art clinic. A PetSmart Charities grant also allowed for the purchasing of cutting-edge equipment to operate the clinic.

The surgical standards at the clinic are derived from Humane Alliance, an organization that has been at the forefront of the nationwide movement to implement the best defense against euthanasia, prevention by sterilization. So far, over 100 new spay/neuter clinics have opened under its mentor program.

The Redinger Spay/Neuter Clinic is the latest component of the Halifax Humane Society’s continued initiative to reduce and eventually eliminate the pet over-population problem in Volusia County.

Spay/neuter surgeries have proven to have the largest direct impact on reducing the number of animals going into shelters. As the graphic on the left shows, just one unsterilized cat or dog can lead to hundreds and even thousands of unplanned and/or unwanted kittens or puppies.

Why spay/neuter my pet?
Aside from helping control the pet population, there are several other benefits to spaying or neutering your pet. Both males and females face a lower risk of cancer after surgery (testicular cancer in males, breast cancer in females). Sterilized animals tend to exhibit better behavior as well. Animals that have not been sterilized may “mark their territory” by urinating in the house. Some aggression problems can also be solved by early sterilization surgery. Unsterilized pets are far more likely to roam in search of a partner, putting them in danger of traffic or predatory animals. Spaying or neutering your pet will actually save you money in the long run. Sterilization is far cheaper than the cost of caring for a litter of kittens or puppies, or the vet bills if your animal is injured while roaming. Reducing the number of stray animals makes your community a safer place as well.

Before Surgery

Do not allow your pet to eat after midnight. Pets can still have water.
Keep your pet indoors.
Upon arrival bring your pet to be weighed to complete check-in.
When entering the clinic, dogs must be on a leash and cats must be in a carrier.

After Surgery

Limit your pet's activity.
Keep your pet on its regular diet.
Keep the incision dry and check it twice daily.
Monitor your pet's pain levels.
Keep in-heat females away from males for at least two weeks following sterilization.
Watch for complications.
Call the clinic with any concerns.

Post Surgery Follow-Up
After your pet’s surgery, the next step is to follow up with a trusted veterinarian. Building an ongoing relationship with your veterinarian, if you have not already, is essential to your pet’s well-being.

Preventive care like annual exams, dental/skin care, and other treatments are all best handled by a full-service veterinary clinic. They will keep your pet up-to-date on the vaccinations and preventative medication they need.

Preventive care and general wellness checkups cost money, but are a vital part of keeping your pet healthy, so you can enjoy their company for a long time.
